Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
