Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
